Edgar Allan Poes Life and The Raven Essay - 694 Words

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts. His parents David and Elizabeth Poe were professional actors. They had three children: Henry, Edgar, and Rosalie. When in 1817, Mrs. Poe died, Henry was taken to be raised with his grandmother, Edgar was adopted by the wealthy couple, Frances and John Allan, and Rosalie was taken by another couple. The luckiest one became Edgar because his new parents were very wealthy people, so he was able to go to different schools. When he was seventeen, he entered the University of Virginia, but because of his gambling and drinking problems he was dismissed from there. Even though he had drinking problems, he joined the U.S. army and became a sergeant-major. Poe’s one of the famous works is â€Å"The Ravenâ⠂¬ , which was dedicated to the school children’s memory in the nineteenth century, first got published in New York Evening Mirror in January, 1845.This poem had an enormous success and got published in many other publications in America and Europe. Many critics connect Poe’s tragic life with his poem’s synopsis (â€Å"Explanation†, par.1). The poem is about a man who dreams about his lost love, Lenore, and how the talking bird, who only knows one word â€Å"Nevermore†, usually visits him. Poe’s famous poem â€Å"The Raven† became very popular from the day of its publishing not only because of it doesn’t have any dates or references to historical events in it, but also because of the way he expresses his view of death and sadness. Even though it looks like the narrator has a very free and comfortable life of a wealthy person, his expression doesn’t make a clear political points. Furthermore, Poe tries to unleash the anarchy of slavery. He never waited for somebody who would destroy his life comfort and his work, he was just writing things he felt and expressed himself via his excellent poems.
